Newton's first law of motion states that an object will remain in its original state  or in a state of uniform velocity if no external force acts on the object.   An object that is stationary will remain stationary. For example, a stone in the ground is in a state of rest.   The rock will remain stationary on the ground when no force is applied. Therefore, to move the stationary object, an external force is required.  The stationary stone moves when a force (throwing a stone) is applied to it. When an object moving with uniform velocity it will keep moving with uniform velocity along a straight line .
